  • Benefits of Photographing Kids

There is something very special, unique, and magical about photographs. A picture captures a moment and holds onto it forever more. When the video camera first became affordable to the middle income family, there were some individuals that felt like the camera would become obsolete. After all, videos allow us to see the event unfold from beginning to end, whereas a photograph locks us into an instant of time. That is exactly why I believe that photography is here to stay and serves as a wonderful family librarian of our lives. Photography allows us to capture the best part of a day, a trip, or a family vacation. This is especially true when it comes to our children. Consider some of the advantages of kid photography.

The advantages of taking photographs instead of videos

    1. A picture doesn't reveal the fight and struggle that went on between your son and daughter to decide who would stand near mom.

    2. A photograph doesn't reveal the clutter and chaos going on in the background.

    3. A photograph allows our memory to construct that magical snapshot the way we want to remember it.

    4. The era of digital photography gives us the luxury of taking hundreds of pictures and picking our favorites. Videos require hours of viewing for the sake of seeing a few precious moments stuck somewhere in the middle.

Tips for taking great shots of your children

    1. Keep your shots as candid as possible. Leave the taking of the family picture to the kid photographers.

    2. Most children don't have the ability to strike a beautiful pose when the photographer says "cheese".

    3. Attempt to take pictures that are in the proper context of your children's interests, activities, and actions. It is much easier to take great pics of your daughter or son while they are involved in those daily activities and events in their lives.

Taking pictures with a purpose in mind

    1. Make your photos meaningful. That doesn't mean dressing the kids up in their best outfits and taking photos in the park. Photographs capture moments in our lives that spark memories in our mind later on. What do you want those photos to say to you years from now? The more you attempt to create a pose or stage a picture of your child, the less it will reveal years from now.

    2. Candid shots will be the ones that often become your eventual favorites.

    3. If possible, build tradition with your photos. Every year, we would take our 4 young children to Disneyland and we usually took our camera. At some point in the day, they would always make their way to a wrought iron railing looking out to Tom Sawyer's Island. Going through old photos, we found that, unknowingly, my wife had captures this same scene on seven different trips to the Magic Kingdom. In most of them, the kids were in the same order and candid pose. It makes a priceless picture collage we display on the wall showing our children's progression through their school aged years.

Make certain that you take the time to photograph your children throughout their growing years. You will find that these pics will get so much more viewing than the hours of video you have already compiled. Don't hesitate to call on the services of an experienced family photographer for these memories. They understand what it takes to create honesty and authenticity in their photograph sessions. This is especially true in family photographs.
